Dear Dr. Mitch,

I am a feature dancer who is on the road at least 6 months of the year. The other 6 months I do adult films, private domination sessions, or dance at a local "go-go" club.

My question is: when I am on the road, I have a personal valet who looks after my costumes and merchandise. He does a great job, but he is not trained in any type of defense. I really don't want to travel interstate with guns. What else can I do to protect myself for security purposes? I am getting a big following now, and I know from reading your experience with being attacked that it only takes one crazed fan to kill you.

Can you please give me some suggestions on how to better protect myself?

You're not kidding. It only takes one crazy to ruin your day or kill you. I was followed from a local club, stalked driving home, and someone walked through my security gate garage, pushed his way into my apartment and proceeded to rape me, strangle me, almost crushed my larynx, knocked out 3 teeth, broke my nose in 5 places, and left numerous bite marks on my face and body.

It was the most horrible experience of my life, and this person was trying to kill me. He was fascinated with my "S&M films and Jesus Christ." I have nothing against S&M films or Jesus, it's just that this person had an unhealthy mix of both. The neighbors eventually heard me breaking things and called 911. I was lucky.

From now on I suggest your valet take some self defense classes and you should, too. The best, in my opinion, for women are taught by ex-Israeli female soldiers; they have wonderful techniques that you can use. Here are some helpful hints in the meantime:

* Check into a hotel under a different name.

* Always have security from the club walk you out and into the door of your car, and then from your car to the club.

* If you find yourself alone and you suspect someone is following you, take your keys and place them individually between your fingers so they resemble a claw. This way you can go right for the eyes.

* If necessary, go for the balls, eyes, face, and scream as loud as you can and squirm so no one can get a "hold" on you.

* Be careful of carrying a gun or knife, as by the time you take a look for and prepare it, it can be taken away from you.

* NEVER EVER get into a car, you may never get out.

* And this may be hard for some of us, but dress inconspicuously- like a regular girl. If you have big boobs, don't wear tight sweaters in a foreign town. Don't advertise your sexy body - it may give some asshole the idea that you are enticing him.

* If someone is following you by car or on foot, drive to the nearest police station or store where there are people and call 911. if you are walking - same thing. Go where there are people and light if it is night. tell someone, call 9111.
